Way old Savvy to the New

Craven County Government wants to upgrade their website to the newest version.

They are running 3.03 I believe. They are on a virtual server and here's what the plan is and you tell us if it will work.

New server - new CF8 - new Savvy files and import the old database into the new database and transfer files directly over.

Will that work or do we need to make "steps" into the new version?

Upgrading 3.03 should be fine. CF8 is great. Move files over. Not sure if you need to move the db. Just make sure the database is mssql or mysql and that when you move it over all of the default values and indexes get copied over too.

Make sure the site is working version 3 on the new location before you do the upgrade. That way there is no confusion if the server is an issue or the upgrade is.

Once all is working well, then run the /install upgrade from the new Savvy build.; ▶ Reply to This

We will need to move the database to the new location.
Remembering the issues that Craven Community had, is it best to back up the old db and restore to the new location prior to the install/ upgrade to ensure the 3.03 works fine prior to upgrade.

Here's my thoughts... in prior experiences with the upgrades, the default values that the newer versions require were not always upgraded in the database causing some errors. Forgive my mssql/mysql lack of knowledge, but it seems to me that if we did a fresh / new install on a new server and imported the old database into the newly created database, that would ensure that all the default values are accurately in place. Permalink Reply by Joshua Cyr on October 20, 2009 at 9:44am: Ya that isn't a good plan. MUCH better to copy over existing db then do the upgrade. The upgrade will actually fix the indexes but it wont fix default values. Which db is it? this tool will conect to a db and create a .sql file backup of a db, you can then run that .sql file on the new db to move over everything. We use it here and it works very well. Just don't move from mysql to mssql.

Would it be best then for me to edit the .sql file to set the default values prior to the upgrade or simply allow the errors in the upgrade tell me which default values to correct?

So, to make sure I'm understanding properly, simply move the existing database in its current version over to the CF8 server. Once moved and working properly, THEN upgrade the files and the database.; ▶ Reply to This
